My topic is the shift from 'architect' to 'gardener', where 'architect' stands for 'someone who carries a full picture of the work before it is made', to 'gardener' standing for 'someone who plants seeds and waits to see exactly what will come up'. I will argue that today's composer are more frequently 'gardeners' than 'architects' and, further, that the 'composer as architect' metaphor was a transitory historical blip.

If there can be any potential in a notion of aesthetic experience understood as suspension it is perhaps through this paradoxical idea of choice and not through the understanding of suspension as cessation or regression. This would not rest on the undecidability of artworks, but instead conceive undecidability as the prerequisite for a choice. In this sense, the potential space yielded by artworks is not definitively a space of morality or a space of new forms of subjectivity. It is primarily a space of choice, a potential to resist and a possibility to create. To consider the potential of artworks to posit a suspension through both production and reception is to consider our choice for a space to be full or empty. When an artwork is made or perceived, it is done through a process that is always partially inexplicable: changes are made, plans are laid and then reformed, or are never even made. The end product is often the beginning of another project or the reposing of the original question. Perhaps the undecidable moment of suspension is not so much the exact opposition between two poles to create or to receive, to determine or be indeterminate but perhaps to open a possibility to choose, or in another sense, to decide to imagine. One way for architects to behave more like Silicon Valley engineers is to explore incomplete form. Incomplete form is a credo in other arts as well as computer technology, notably in jazz improvisation, or in sculpture purposely left unfinished, or in poetry which, to use Wallace Steven's phrase, "engineers only the fragment." The architect Peter Eisenman has sought to evoke something of the same spirit in the term "light architecture," meaning a building designed so that it can be added to or revised internally in the course of time.(...)

The guidelines for constructing an incomplete form are fairly clear: the structural skeleton is conceived as a series of cores rather than a single core; the elements of the skeleton are designed to permit "hinge" addition; building skins are made easily detachable from the skeleton; the space immediately around the building is treated as colonizable ground, rather than protected as viewing space for the building as an object. The materials and structural technologies all exist which permit buildings to change shape in these ways in time, but are not used well; as designers, we remain the prisoners of specification.

My parting thought is that asserting the value of incomplete form is a political act architects should perform in the public realm. This means asserting not only the beauty of unfinished objects but also their practicality. Buildings left incomplete, partially unprogrammed are structures which can truly be sustainable in time; the flexible building would help end the current wasteful cycle which marries construction and demolition. Asserting the value of incomplete built forms is a political act because it confronts the desire for fixity; it asserts, in steel, glass, and fiber-optic cable that the public realm is a process. Conventional logic and traditional pedagogy posits that by accumulating information we bridge the gap that separates ignorance from understanding. This seems to make linear sense, as illustrated by this simple drawing:

But art is not education, even though the latter often tries to harness the former. The sciences want us to understand and shape the world, power structures tell us what we are supposed to think about the world, and art wants us to be awed and mystified by the world on the one hand, and to be critically aware of our assumptions about it on the other. In many ways, art seeks to compromise our understanding of the world. To understand, therefore, although endlessly evoked in museum education programmes and mission statements, is missing the point.

In art, what matters is curiosity, which in many ways is the currency of art. Whether we understand an artwork or not, what helps it succeed is the persistence with which it makes us curious. Art sparks and maintains curiosities, thereby enlivening imaginations, jumpstarting critical and independent thinking, creating departures from the familiar, the conventional, the known. An artwork creates a horizon: its viewer perceives it but remains necessarily distant from it. The aesthetic experience is always one of speculation, approximation and departure. It is located in the distance that exists between art and life.

Yes, it sounds like a bad excuse. I’m afraid i’m still very much responsible for my own decisions. I just have hard time relating to “objective beauty”. What interests me is mostly response mechanisms of a viewer – viewer relationship with an object or an image and object’s almost magical ability to gain power over individual. From Marx’s commodity fetishism to Fraser’s sympathetic magic and Benjamin’s work on mimesis modernity tried to understand, regulate and in a sense harvest the power of objects and images. In that sense “objective beauty” is considered a lure, a spectacle, a mechanism of entrapment that is always introduced with specific half obscured agenda. From basic biological standpoint when for example talking about animal mating this agenda can be called reproduction. You can also call it corporate marketing strategy when you are unwrapping your brand new ipad. Such beauty is secondary category and straightforward recognition of it is always problematic. I mean, I can confess the work is “beautiful”, but you can also call it strategic beauty and besides that you’ll never know if I’m misleading you or not. (Tobias Putrih).
